What makes Catholic education special?

“Catholic education and Corpus Christi School offer strong academics, small classes and experienced faculty, but our community service is just as important. We teach our students to help one another and to give to those who are less fortunate. As part of the mission at CCS service projects are completed throughout each school year by each class,” said Principal Dick Taylor. “Our students also are encouraged to reach out to the community and help neighbors in need.”

During Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 31 through Feb.2, CCS students will focus on three service projects.

The younger students in kindergarten through second will visit the Home for Men and sing Valentine songs and make holiday themed placemats for the residents of the retirement home, located just a few blocks away from the school. The children will return again closer to Valentine’s Day to distribute homemade cards to the residents.

“Our students visit the residents of The Home for Men on all holidays, performing activities appropriate for each season. It’s this community engagement that Corpus Christi wants to instill in its students along with academic success,” said Taylor.

The middle school students, third through sixth grades, will be writing thank you cards to United States veterans in Veteran Hospitals around the country and thanking them for their service. These middle grade students also will create gifts of toiletries for local homeless shelters.

Seventh and eighth graders will volunteer their time and spend a day at Catholic Charities 18th Street Center doing any tasks needed throughout the day.

Each school year, CCS students also collect goods for Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets to be packed and delivered, collect food for the Corpus Christi Parish Center pantry, and visit local hospitals during the holiday season to perform in a hand bell choir while spreading cheer to patients, workers, and visitors.

“This year we were also able to help a new school getting started in Ghana, Africa by donating 48 school desks. We partnered with Route International and All About the Children’s Needs to deliver the desks. All About the Children’s Needs is a charitable, non-profit organization aiding poverty-stricken African children,” said Taylor.

“Corpus Christi School students learn a lot about life through the projects and learn how to think of others. These service projects also are a way for our community to get a sense of what CCS teaches students and to know that we care about them,” said Taylor.
